Most people would like to have the biggest diamonds possible. Even those on the more modest and daintier side would still prefer a bigger diamond than the one they can afford. What can you do? Diamonds are pricey. Well, there is something you can do. You can create an illusion of a larger diamond through various methods. Here’s how.
Add More Prongs
A simple and practical way of making your diamond appear bigger is by adding prongs to the setting. Round diamonds require four prongs, but you can have as many as six prongs holding your diamond. The sparkling metal encasing the diamond, especially if its white gold or platinum, will make the stone seem larger and more impressive. If you do not like having so many prongs, there are many other ways of giving your diamond a larger appearance.
Surround Your Diamond with Diamonds
The halo style setting, where many smaller diamonds surround the larger main diamond, is extremely popular among those interested in enlarging their diamond "look" as well as those who simply like the style. Either way, having more sparkling stones on your ring only adds to the beauty and sophistication of the ring.
Have it Set High
When a diamond is set into a ring it becomes one with the setting. On the other hand, it does not stand out, which makes it easier to get lost in the ring, especially if it is a smaller stone. If the diamond is set high, preferably with thick prongs, the stone will seem much bigger than it really is.
Select a Shallow Diamond
If you really want to have a large-looking diamond but cannot afford one, you can search for a diamond that carries most of its weight in its width (as in wider vs more pointy). This will make it seem really big even though it can be equal in carat weight to a stone with a much smaller table size but that is deeper. The downside of such a diamond is that it will not display brilliance as much. If this is less important to you anyway, then you should go for the wider stone. Otherwise, stick to a stone with the recommended proportions and use the other ideas for enhancing the diamond’s size.
Consider Diamond Shape
In general, elongated diamond shapes automatically make your diamond appear larger since it takes up more "real estate" on your finger. Opting for an oval, emerald or marquise shaped diamond, for example, instead of a traditional round shape, can make your diamond instantly feel bigger.
There is no arguing that large diamonds can be stunning and breathtaking. However, if you are solely focused on the size, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. The setting is what makes the look. The diamond is like the frosting on top
